Lana Del Rey: A Romanticization of Abuse

Image
I love Lana Del Rey. She has been one of my favorite singers for the majority of my life. I listen to her pretty much every day, Hover, in spite of my love for her,  I am still able to recognize that some of the messages she puts out are very problematic. She has many fans who are as young as ten years old. I believe that the messages she sends are especially not good for all the little girls who listen to her.              For one, Lana seems to have a infatuation with the "aesthetic" of Lolita. For background information, Lolita is a novel about a pedophile who marries a woman only to get at her 12 year old daughter. He then takes her away on a road trip across America to fulfil his sick pleasures. Lana mentions her in many of her songs. Multiple songs depict the story of a young girl and a much older man refered to as "daddy". Their relationship is almost always depicted as toxic and abu...

Lovemarks in my own life: Disney

Image
A lovemark is a brand or product which has created undeniable loyalty in it's consumers. Although I do not like to admit it, Disney is a lovemark in my life. It began when I was very young. I would watch Pocahontas and Mulan nearly every single day. That was wear it started. Even now, when I hear the Disney opening theme, my heart warms. I associate it with all my great memories of childhood. Today, as soon as a new princess movie comes out, I go to the theatres to see it despite the quality of the movie beings  poor. Disney is so much of a lovemark in my life that despite knowing all the problematic things associated with Disney, it still has a special place in my heart. I am fully aware about the messages about body image, race, gender roles and the unrealistic expectations is gives little children yet still I love Disney.        I don't think I am alone in this. Many young girls and even older women much like I still kno...

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: Witches in Media

Image
Witches have been portrayed in media for hundreds of years as green women flying on broomsticks and doing the work of the devil. Stemming from the Salem witch trials, this has been a common narrative throughout generations.  Even today, the ignorance surrounding witches and Wicca is astounding. The attitude towards witches has barely made any change even in today's modern times. In my opinion, this is do to poor portrayal in media. Horror movies present their representation as evil and conieving old hags who kill children and sacrifice animals. This couldn't be anywhere farther from the truth.          Before I delve into the analysis of a specific show, I will provide a brief history on Wicca and common misconceptions which are perpetuated by media. Wicca is a spiritual practice based on love and respect for the elements of nature. It is very peaceful, it's main ethical belief being "An it harm none". Although all Wicca...

Bojack Horseman

Image
Bojack Horseman is a show which I really enjoy. It is about the life of dysfunction which a horse leads as he deals with issues in his own mental health. The show is extremely hilarious but also has a much darker side. I like to think of the show of one big PSA for addiction and mental illness. Bojack is an alchoholic who denies he has a problem. Because of this, he ruins the life of others and all the relationships in his life. Believing that he is just a bad person, he never makes any effort to change. This is a common theme for many characters in the show. None of the characters are like-able and have issues of their own. For example, the character of Diane provides a voice of reason in Bojack's life. She wants to believe he is a good person and preaches that she believes in second chances. However, when it actually comes down to what Bojack has done, she concludes that he doesn't deserve to be forgiven and that he is too far gone. I believe that this show provides an i...

Trump's Impeachment

Image
I chose the topic of Trump's possible impeachment. The articles I chose to compare were the New York Times and Fox News. I chose these sources in particular to see the difference in word choice between the liberal and conservative viewpoint. In the New York Times article, the language used was very neutral for the most part and did not succumb to the abuses listed in Orwell's essay. The article did not make use of fluffy language or metaphors without meaning. The language was very clear, concise and straight to the point. Much to my surprise, the language used didn't seem very biased. The Fox News article was written by Donald Trump Jr. and thus had a clear bias conveyed through the language which it used. He used literary devices in order to convey his opinion on the matter. For example, he used a similie comparing democrats to "a bunch of lunatics. Words were used to paint democrats in a bad light. This article only somewhat displayed the "decay of l...

My Relationship With Media

Image
My relationship with media has been complicated throughout my life. Because I have had an iphone for the majority if my time on this earth, I have always had easy access to media. When I was little, I would idolize and want to be like characters in TV shows. Now the equivalent is music. I listen to music almost all the time. Mostly, I listen to classical music which I don't think has much of an effect on me. A part of media which I do not like is news. It is almost always bad and can be misleading depending on the source. Seeing a news article on a platform such as instagram can make or break my day. Social media such as instagram has the ability to greatly effect me for better or for worse. It is the form of media which I consume the most often. In the past, seeing articles on instagram has caused my opinions of important matters to sway one way or another. At least I can admit that it is a problem.
